When learning to surf in the late 80’s we would escape the crowded waves of California and Australia by surfing the freezing cold waters of Tofino on Canada’s isolated West Coast of Canada. Those days are long gone.

I shot these photos at one of Tofino’s more popular beginner surf beaches last Friday. Never in my life have I seen such a crowded break. When we learned all we did was laugh and smile from ear to ear which was not the case for many of these beginners. While we enjoyed watching the chaos of boards flying it was a saddening to see all of these people learning to surf in such a hectic and soulless environment.

Fear not, if you want to venture a little off the beaten path you can still find a uncrowded wave in Tofino, it just means that you might have to search a little further.
